Wellington is not on the list. New Zealand's active register holds exactly five land-based casinos, and they sit in Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin. The capital has gaming machines in pubs and clubs, which is a different licensing category altogether.

Dated summary: register position checked 4 October 2026. Venue details should be confirmed with the operator before travel.

The five active venues, and the cities they are in

New Zealand has exactly five active land-based casinos. Two are in the North Island, in Auckland and Hamilton. Three are in the South Island, in Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin. That is the complete set, and our casino map shows each one with its city and current status.

Wellington appears nowhere in it. This is not an omission on our part or a gap in the data; the capital simply has no licensed casino venue. If you have found a page suggesting otherwise, check whether it is describing an online brand, a gaming-machine venue or a closed property.

That last category is worth knowing about. A closed casino entity remains outside the active marker set, so an older map result or an archived listing can still be accurate history while being wrong about today. Our venue directory works from the current registry rather than from accumulated search results.

Pub and club gaming machines are not a casino

Wellington does have gambling. Class 4 gaming machines operate outside casinos, commonly in pubs and clubs, and they are not counted as casinos in any register. The category is defined by the machines and the venue type, not by the number of machines in the room.

The practical difference is what is on offer. Class 4 is a gaming-machine category, so a Class 4 venue is not where you find dealt table games. Casino venues may offer approved gaming machines and table games under their venue and operator licences, which is the licensing route that produces a floor with both. Our gambling types guide keeps the categories separate, and it is the quickest way to work out which one a particular venue belongs to.

So the honest answer to "are there casinos in Wellington" is no, and the honest follow-up is that there is still regulated gambling in the city under a different part of the law.

What a Wellington resident is usually actually asking

Three different questions arrive at this page, and they have three different answers.

If the question is where the nearest venue is, the answer depends on which island you want to end up on. Hamilton and Auckland are the North Island pair, with Auckland the larger city precinct. Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin are the South Island three, which means a flight or a ferry from the capital. Each venue record carries its address and its operator so you can judge the trip before committing to it.

If the question is about playing online, that is a separate regime rather than a substitute. Online casino gambling sits under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 and remains in a licensing transition, and the rules, registers and age checks are not the same as a venue's. Our comparison of the two regimes sets out what differs.

And if the question is simply whether a familiar name has disappeared, search the maintained venue list first. A name can be an alias for an existing entity, a different gambling type, or a closed property, and establishing which one it is saves a wasted journey.

Planning a trip from the capital

Treat a map marker as orientation, not as a plan. The marker identifies the venue location. It does not establish a parking space, an accessible entrance, which door is in use late in the evening, or a safe walking route at the end of the night. Buildings can occupy a large precinct and have entrances on different streets, so the final approach should come from the venue's own current guidance.

The nearest-looking pin is also not always the easiest visit. Arriving with luggage, needing step-free access, or wanting workable accommodation can all make a slightly more distant city the simpler choice. Those are planning constraints rather than reasons to doubt the register.

Entry requirements are worth settling before you travel rather than at the door. Our entry checklist covers the identification and preparation side, and visit planning deals with the sequence of a multi-city trip.

Why search results disagree with the register

Several things produce a Wellington casino result that does not survive checking. Online brands advertise nationally, so a brand page can rank for a city it has no physical presence in. Gaming-machine venues sometimes use casino-adjacent language in their own marketing. Event and function venues occasionally host themed casino nights, which are entertainment rather than licensed gambling.

None of those becomes a licensed casino by appearing in a search result. The test is whether the venue holds a casino licence, and that is a matter of public record rather than presentation. Our licence records and operator relationships show which entity holds what for each of the five active venues.

If you believe a venue is missing from the active list, tell us. We would rather check a registry entry than leave a reader with the wrong answer, and the correction path is linked from every page.

Sources and boundary

Register statements here come from our own maintained records, checked 4 October 2026: exactly five active land-based casinos, two in the North Island and three in the South Island, in Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin, with closed entities excluded from the active set. Class 4 gaming machines operate outside casinos and are not counted as casinos, and online casino gambling sits under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 in a licensing transition.

Not verified here: opening hours, parking, accessible entrances, transport timetables or current table and machine mixes at any venue. Those come from the operator's own current information. For the statutory background, see our gambling law guide.

Practical detail

Compare regimes rather than the appearance of a game

A shared brand does not create a shared licence

Roulette on a physical floor and roulette on a remote platform may look similar to a player, but their premises, operator records and regulatory frameworks differ. The brand displayed above the game is not sufficient evidence that the same licence covers both services.

When checking a claim, write down the product, operator entity, jurisdiction and date. An overseas licence claim is not equivalent to a New Zealand online register entry. An affiliate button is a commercial handoff and cannot provide the legal evidence missing from the underlying record.

Compare access and consumer questions separately

A land-based visit asks about the entrance, accepted ID, operating hours and journey home. An online service asks different questions about country eligibility, account verification, payments, bonus conditions and the current licensed record. Transferring a physical venue’s familiar name or age label into an online advertisement can obscure those differences.

A useful side-by-side guide therefore compares where evidence comes from, not which setting is more likely to produce a win. Neither a physical visit nor an online bonus should be treated as income. If gambling is causing concern, the support pathway matters more than choosing another format.
