Online casino legal status in New Zealand

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 is in force, but the market is still in transition. DIA says operating restrictions change on 1 December 2026 and licences are expected from early 2027.

The Act came into force. It established a licensing framework and restrictions on unlicensed online casino gambling and advertising.

1 December 2026

DIA says only successful applicants may continue under the transitional exemption while applications are assessed. Other providers must exit the New Zealand market.
