How casino venue licence renewal works

A casino venue licence holder may apply to the Gambling Commission for renewal under section 134 of the Gambling Act 2003. An application, hearing direction or submission is not the final renewal decision.

Dated legal summary: checked 4 October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.

Application and public record

The Commission may publish the application, current venue and operator licence documents, a casino impact report, host responsibility material and responses from public agencies. Each document has a different role and date.

What the Commission considers

The statutory process requires the Commission to follow sections 135 to 137. Suitability, compliance and the net benefit assessment cannot be reduced to a directory score.

Application is not outcome

A venue can remain active while renewal is being considered. The tracker labels the supported stage and does not predict the decision.

Decision references

References such as GC05/19 identify Commission decisions. They should not be presented as universal casino licence numbers unless the authoritative instrument says so.

Current monitoring

Hamilton, Queenstown and Dunedin have recent renewal material in the Commission record. Check the dated tracker and the official page before relying on a status summary.
