Gambling types in New Zealand

A licensed casino is not the same thing as a pub or club with Class 4 pokies. Racecourses, lotteries, sports betting and online casinos are also separate categories.

Casino gambling

Casino venues may offer approved gaming machines and table games under venue and operator licences.

Class 4 pokies

Class 4 gaming machines operate outside casinos, commonly in pubs and clubs. They are not counted as casinos.

Online casino gambling

Online casinos now sit under the separate Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 and a transitional licensing regime.
