History of casinos in New Zealand

Christchurch Casino opened in 1994 and is widely identified as New Zealand’s first casino. The national active count is now five after the former Wharf Casino licence was surrendered in 2024.

1994 to 2002

The currently active venues opened across Christchurch, Auckland, Dunedin, Queenstown and Hamilton during this period.

2003

The Gambling Act 2003 established the current national framework and prohibited new casino venue licences except through the statutory system.

28 March 2024

The Wharf venue licence was surrendered. Wharf is a historical record and is excluded from the active list, map, comparison and structured data.
