Deep Descent: rules, features and verified RTP settings

Deep Descent is a Relax Gaming expanding-ways slot that begins at 5×3 with 243 ways and can unlock five rows for 3,125 ways. Each round selects a low-paying collection symbol; seven collected copies unlock row four and 21 unlock row five. Numbered Wilds on the central reels trigger respins and count down when used. The current official config checked on 6 October 2026 states 95.00% RTP. Current help does not state one hard whole-game win cap.

Short answer

Evidence-led verdict

Deep Descent is a Relax Gaming first-party title identified in the checked demo as deepdescent. the current official help package checked on 6 October 2026 does not expose a human-readable version number or publication date; the official launch announcement is dated 3 August 2021. The rules describe five reels expanding from three rows and 243 ways to five rows and 3,125 ways. Those identifiers matter because lower-return builds and market-specific clients can share the same artwork.

The checked help states a theoretical RTP of 95.00%, equivalent to a 5% theoretical house edge. That is the figure for the client opened during this review, not proof that every operator deploys the same build. Relax's product record lists alternative game IDs, so the percentage inside the exact live client remains the controlling value.

The checked help does not state one fixed ordinary-game maximum. Its paytables and any separately documented jackpot rules must therefore be read without inventing a universal cap. The reference stake range is €0.10 to €50. The risk profile is High, as described in the official launch record; return and prize information do not predict whether a feature or large award will occur in a session.

This page confirms studio authorship, current help text and public release status. It does not claim that a New Zealand operator offers the title, that a demo is a local real-money product, or that a displayed euro-denominated reference range will appear as NZD. Those questions require a separate operator and live-client check.

Original 2021 release

Exact game package and checked evidence

This review covers Deep Descent, identifier deepdescent. The official product page, own-games catalogue and 3 August 2021 news release establish Relax Gaming authorship and the original publication record.

The loaded help uses the current translation package but shows no human-readable version or update date. Our evidence label therefore records the check date, 6 October 2026. The separate official config exposes the active 95.00% RTP value used in this review.

The 2021 release described high volatility and a maximum of almost 19,000×. Those claims provide launch context. The current help is stronger for mechanics, and because it does not state a hard universal cap, this guide does not convert the older headline into one.

The client was a global fun-money package. Its availability proves that the supplier documentation could be inspected; it does not prove that a New Zealand operator carries the game or that an NZ-facing client uses the same settings.

243 to 3,125 combinations

Adjacent-reel ways and row expansion

The game begins with five reels and three active rows. Matching symbols pay on adjacent reels beginning with reel one, giving 3×3×3×3×3, or 243, possible position combinations when all five reels are involved.

Unlocking a fourth row raises the maximum to 4⁵, or 1,024 ways. Unlocking the fifth row raises it to 5⁵, or 3,125 ways. The ways figure counts possible positional routes; it does not mean every spin contains that many winning combinations.

Several copies of the same symbol on one reel can contribute to separate ways when adjacent reels also contain matches. Symbols do not need to sit on a drawn payline, but they still must begin on reel one and continue without a gap.

Wilds can substitute under the paytable and have their own respin rule. Expanding the grid creates more positions, yet it also changes the symbol field. More theoretical ways does not guarantee a win or imply that the RTP increases after a row opens.

One low symbol selected each round

Collection thresholds and row unlocks

At the beginning of a round, the game randomly selects one low-paying symbol as the collection symbol. Copies that participate in wins add to the collection count. A visible copy that is not part of a valid win does not automatically advance the meter.

Contributing Wilds can help form the win but do not count as collected copies. The distinction prevents a Wild from simultaneously standing in for the selected symbol and inflating the collection total beyond the actual selected symbols present.

Collecting seven copies unlocks the fourth row and places a value-four Wild on reel three under the help rules. Reaching 21 collected copies unlocks the fifth row and places a value-five Wild on reel three. The thresholds operate inside the active round.

A strong first win can collect seven or more at once and move directly into the first expanded state. Progress is not a persistent account meter, so an unfinished count does not carry into a later paid spin after the round and its respins end.

Values two through five

Numbered Wild positions and countdown logic

Numbered Wilds can appear on reels two and four. Reel three becomes available for the special Wild after all required rows are unlocked through collection. Their location is therefore constrained rather than possible on every reel.

A Wild shows a starting number from two to five, locks in position and triggers a respin. The number is a countdown associated with qualifying use, not a direct cash multiplier. Calling a value-five Wild a “5× Wild” would misstate the rule.

When the Wild participates in the relevant winning outcome, its displayed count decreases. It remains active while its rule continues to require respins. More than one numbered Wild can affect the board state, but each retains its own displayed count.

The Wild substitutes in ordinary evaluation while locked. That can help produce adjacent-reel ways and additional collection-symbol wins. It does not guarantee that every respin wins or that the countdown reaches zero before another terminating condition applies.

Continue while an active Wild remains

Respin sequence and settlement boundaries

The arrival of a numbered Wild starts a respin without a new base stake and holds the Wild in its position. The help says respins continue while a Wild is present under the active rule, allowing collection and grid expansion to develop during one round.

A respin can add new numbered Wilds on eligible reels, creating overlapping countdown states. Each outcome is still evaluated from the current grid. The feature does not preselect a fixed number of spins at trigger.

Unlocking rows during the sequence expands the active field for subsequent evaluation. The new row is not retroactively added to an earlier result. Likewise, the special reel-three Wild belongs to the state reached at the relevant threshold.

When the sequence finishes, the round settles and the collection state clears. A near-threshold meter, expanded grid or active-looking Wild is not saved for the next paid spin. That reset is central to understanding why progress should not be chased.

No current hard-cap sentence

Launch maximum versus current settlement evidence

The original release article described a maximum win of almost 19,000×. It also called the game high volatility. Both statements are attributable to Relax Gaming and accurately describe the 2021 launch communication.

The current official help package checked in 2026 does not state a single hard whole-round cap. It explains pay evaluation, expansion and respins without the explicit “game ends and awards X” language that would establish a present settlement ceiling.

For that reason the launch figure is not placed in the fact strip as the current cap. A promotional maximum, a simulated outcome and a coded cap can differ. The exact live help must say which type applies.

If an operator client shows a cap, record its game ID, version, jurisdiction, currency unit and wording. Until that evidence exists, “not stated in current help” is more accurate than repeating a four-year-old maximum as universal.

Live-help evidence

RTP, house edge and alternative builds

The information panel in the checked official demo states “the theoretical return to player for this game is 95.00%.” Subtracting that value from 100% gives a theoretical house edge of 5%. Both numbers describe the same long-run mathematical relationship from opposite directions; they are not separate charges and they are not a forecast for a deposit.

Checked mode or routeTheoretical RTPHow to use it
Standard client configuration95.00%Current client config: 6 October 2026

A return of 95.00% means that across the model's very large test horizon, average awards correspond to 95.00 units for every 100 units staked. It does not mean a player receives that percentage back after 100 spins. High variation, rare features and capped awards can produce short samples far above or below the designed average.

Alternative game IDs are material even when their exact returns are absent from the public product card. A casino can deploy a lower-RTP build under the same consumer title. We therefore do not label 95.00% “universal” or “guaranteed.” Open the information control in the operator client and look for the percentage after the game has loaded.

Do not infer RTP from a demo balance, one successful bonus, a streaming clip or a site's headline card. A random sample cannot identify the configured model reliably. The useful audit record is the exact title, visible game ID or version, displayed RTP, date and operator client captured together.

Distribution, not prediction

Volatility and maximum-win limits

The available first-party and live-help evidence supports a High, as described in the official launch record risk profile. Volatility concerns how unevenly the mathematical return is distributed: a volatile game can devote more of its return to uncommon events and leave long stretches with small awards or none. It is not a timetable for a bonus and it does not show that a loss is “due” to reverse.

The current help does not publish a single fixed ordinary-game cap. That evidence gap must remain separate from moving progressive prizes and promotional maximum-win copy. If a deployed operator client states a cap, record that exact build and the unit it uses rather than importing a number from another source.

A cap is a settlement limit, not a realistic session target. It provides no countdown, hit schedule or evidence that raising the stake improves the chance per dollar. Previous non-winning spins do not move a random future result closer to the cap. Treat every paid round as new exposure.

Practical risk is also shaped by total stake, spin speed, feature purchases, enhanced-spin options and session length. A lower stake repeated rapidly can expose more money than a higher stake used briefly. Decide the total acceptable loss before opening the game, then use account limits and breaks rather than chasing a feature.

Read the charged amount

Bet range, optional costs and affordability

The product record gives a reference minimum of €0.10 and maximum of €50. Those euro-denominated figures identify the provider's reference build. They do not promise equivalent NZD controls, and an operator can apply different denominations or account limits.

Always read the total bet immediately before a paid action. The interface can show denomination, level, lines and total stake separately. Enhanced spins or bonus-reel options may increase the price of a round, while a feature purchase can cost many multiples of the base stake. The amount leaving the balance is the relevant measure.

A useful pre-session calculation is total bet multiplied by the maximum number of rounds you are prepared to buy, assuming the entire amount can be lost. For a feature purchase, treat the whole displayed price as exposed at once. Do not finance a purchase by increasing the base stake after losses.

Promotional funds do not change the slot's RTP. Wagering requirements, game contribution, maximum-bet rules and cash-out limits sit in the operator's terms. Check them independently, because a bonus can make an otherwise permitted game or stake ineligible.

Interface verification

Mobile help and what a demo can prove

The official web demo loaded a responsive game client and exposed the title, help date, version, rules and return information used here. On a phone, locate the menu, information icon, total bet, balance and paytable before considering a paid round. If text is clipped, rotate the device or expand the help rather than relying on a search result.

A demo can demonstrate symbol movement, feature order, mode selection and interface controls with valueless credits. It cannot establish that a real-money operator accepts players in New Zealand, that the operator uses the same game ID, or that its active RTP matches the demo.

Demo results also cannot validate the long-run RTP. Ten, one hundred or even thousands of observed spins are a noisy sample, especially in a volatile game. A large demo win is not a prediction for paid play and a dry demo sequence is not proof that the published mathematics is wrong.

If desktop and mobile help disagree, pause. Record the exact URL or operator, title, mode, help version and percentages. The mismatch can indicate a cached client, a market build or an update. Current deployed help is stronger evidence than an undated review, but conflicting clients still need clarification.

Separate evidence chain

New Zealand access is not inferred from the demo

Relax Gaming's own-games catalogue and public demo show that the studio publishes Deep Descent. They do not show that a named operator lawfully offers it to a person in New Zealand. Studio publication, aggregation, operator inventory, territorial access and legal status are separate claims.

Before any real-money use, verify the operator's identity, current New Zealand terms, age and location controls, payments, withdrawals, complaints, account limits and self-exclusion tools. A localised page, NZD wallet or country flag is not on its own regulatory proof.

New Zealand's online-gambling position is time-sensitive. Check the Department of Internal Affairs player guidance and our dated legal-status guide at the point of use. This review is about one game's rules and does not provide legal advice.

Even after an operator check, inspect the live game help. A valid operator relationship does not prove the highest RTP, and the right RTP does not prove operator status. Keeping both questions separate prevents a global demo from becoming an unsupported availability claim.

Source reconciliation

What the checked sources establish

The official product page establishes first-party authorship, public release status, layout, reference bets, headline features and the supported market game IDs. The loaded demo supplies the stronger operational evidence for rules, version, displayed RTP, purchase route and win-cap wording.

The current config verifies 95.00% RTP. The help verifies the 5×3 start, 243–3,125 ways, random collection symbol, seven- and 21-symbol row unlocks, numbered Wild positions and respin countdown rules. It does not state a purchase route or one hard current cap. The launch article's almost-19,000× line remains dated context rather than a current settlement limit.

Third-party reviews were used to find frequent questions and contradictions, not to override the live help. Competitors often print only the largest cap, omit the selected mode, describe alternative IDs as exact RTPs without a source, or treat global demo access as operator availability.

The evidence was checked on 6 October 2026. The date matters: Relax can update a client or product card, and operators can retain another certified build. Future checks should start with the deployed help and compare its identifier, version and return with this record.

We do not add a hit rate, feature frequency, universal volatility score, New Zealand operator claim or exact alternative RTP unless the checked first-party material supports it. An explicit evidence gap is preferable to a precise-looking number copied from another release.

Two-minute audit

Checklist before relying on this guide

  1. Match the full title Deep Descent and developer Relax Gaming.
  2. Confirm game ID deepdescent, help date 6 October 2026 and version not exposed where shown.
  3. Check the layout: five reels expanding from three rows and 243 ways to five rows and 3,125 ways.
  4. Read feature triggers, reset rules and settlement order in the live help.
  5. Record the active RTP rather than assuming 95.00%.
  6. Confirm whether the deployed help states an ordinary cap; preserve the gap if it does not.
  7. Read the displayed total stake after enabling any option.
  8. Verify operator identity and New Zealand access independently.
  9. Check promotional terms separately from game mathematics.
  10. Set money and time limits that remain acceptable if no feature arrives.

If the live help differs, use that deployed build and send the title, game ID, version, date and screenshot through our corrections process. That evidence lets us update one canonical review without creating duplicate RTP or bonus pages.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

What is the Deep Descent RTP?

The current official deepdescent configuration checked on 6 October 2026 states 95.00% RTP.

How many ways does Deep Descent have?

It begins with five reels and three rows for 243 ways. Seven collected symbols unlock row four, and 21 unlock row five, increasing the maximum to 3,125 ways.

How do numbered Wilds work?

A Wild on an allowed central reel shows a value from two to five, locks and starts respins. Each qualifying use reduces its count, and the sequence continues while an active Wild remains.

Does Deep Descent have a bonus buy?

The current official help package checked for this build does not document a purchase route.

What is the Deep Descent maximum win?

The current help does not state one hard whole-round cap. A 2021 launch article described a maximum of almost 19,000×, but this guide retains that only as dated promotional context.
