Short answer
Evidence-led verdict
Legacy of Dead is a Play'n GO title released on 2 January 2020 and documented as Game ID 416, version 1.0. It has five reels, three visible positions and up to ten selectable paylines. Three or more Tomb Scatters award eight free spins. One regular symbol is initially chosen as special; enough copies can expand across complete reels and pay even when the expanded reels are not adjacent.
The feature's defining rule appears on a retrigger. Three or more Tombs award eight additional free spins and select another regular symbol as special. More than one symbol type can therefore qualify for expansion as the feature continues. The public page describes unlimited potential retriggers, while the checked rule sheet does not specify a feature-spin cap. That wording describes the rule structure, not the likelihood of repeated awards.
Legacy is rated high volatility at level 8. The official product record gives a 5,000-times-total-bet maximum win. Five RTP configurations are listed, ranging from 96.58% to 84.55%. The gap means a reader must check the deployed game's information panel rather than relying on the highest figure in a search result.

Release, version and title identity
The official records name the game Legacy of Dead, provide the internal identifier “legacyofdead” and list Game ID 416. Both mobile and desktop formats are documented. Those fields help distinguish the product from pages that shorten several related titles to “Dead slot” or combine rules from the studio's broader series.
The 2020 release date is part of the title's identity, not the date of this article. We checked the linked product page and rules on 6 October 2026. Dated verification matters because game documentation, permitted configurations or product-page summaries can change after release.
Legacy shares selectable lines and expanding-symbol free spins with the original Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead, but the starting award and retrigger effect differ. Legacy begins with eight spins and can add a further expanding symbol type. It is also different from Pilgrim of Dead, where the selected symbol becomes sticky by reel and the feature is capped at 30 spins.
The provider record does not prove current access from New Zealand. Operator distribution, geography and RTP deployment are separate facts. The exact live client must be matched before the rule set is used.
Base game
Reels, selectable lines and win evaluation
The base layout uses five reels by three symbol positions. Up to ten paylines can be activated, in numerical order under the official rules. Ordinary line wins run from the leftmost reel to the right across adjacent reels. Only the highest win on a selected line is awarded.
The Tomb symbol is both Wild and Scatter. As Wild, it substitutes for ordinary paying symbols. As Scatter, three or more anywhere award the feature. The scatter does not need to follow a normal line pattern. Symbol-specific awards belong in the in-game paytable and should be checked there rather than copied from an undated review.
Selectable lines make total-bet confirmation important. If fewer lines are active, different patterns are covered and the displayed total stake can change. Fewer lines do not make the remaining lines more likely to hit. Adjusting line count is a coverage and exposure choice, not a method for changing random reel outcomes.
Full-reel expansion is a free-spin mechanic. A regular base-game appearance of a high symbol does not automatically expand. Likewise, the rule that special symbols need not be adjacent applies after the feature's expansion condition, not to every ordinary payline win.
Feature sequence
Eight free spins and reel expansion
Three or more Tomb Scatters start eight free spins. At feature entry, one ordinary paying symbol is selected as the special expanding symbol. When enough special symbols land to create an additional win on active lines, the symbols can expand to cover the complete reels on which they appear.
The expanded reels do not have to be adjacent. This exception allows the feature to evaluate the selected symbol across separated reel positions. It does not mean every symbol pays anywhere, and it does not convert the base game into a ways-pay format. The ten payline structure still frames ordinary wins.
A selected high-value symbol may create more theoretical potential than a lower one, but selection alone is not a win. Copies still need to land and satisfy the expansion condition. A free-spin round can finish with a small return even when the special symbol looks favourable.
The Tomb remains Wild and Scatter during the feature, but it is not the selected ordinary expander. Three or more Tombs perform the retrigger action described in the next section. No feature is “due” after a long base-game sequence; each result is produced by the game's random model.
Legacy's key distinction
Retriggers add another expanding symbol
When at least three Tombs land during free spins, the game awards eight additional free spins. It also selects an additional regular symbol as special. This means more than one symbol type can become eligible for full-reel expansion in the same feature.
The additional selection is not merely a replacement for the first. The feature can retain the previously chosen special type and add another. Later qualifying retriggers can repeat the process according to the documented rule. The public page summarises this as potential unlimited retriggers, and the rule sheet does not print a specific spin cap.
“Unlimited potential” must be read precisely. It means the rules do not impose the kind of 30-spin or 80-spin ceiling documented for Pilgrim or GO Collect. It does not mean a player is guaranteed to retrigger, that the session can literally continue forever or that the maximum win disappears. The 5,000x overall cap still applies.
Multiple selected types can create more expansion opportunities, but high volatility remains. A retrigger may arrive late, and additional spins may produce limited value. The sequence cannot be forced by stake changes, line selection or timing.
If a live client describes only one selected symbol after a retrigger, confirm the game ID and version. It may be another title or an updated rule set. Do not resolve the conflict by borrowing an animation explanation from a third-party page.
Configuration menu
Verified RTP settings
The checked rule sheet lists five certified return configurations. Legacy's top value, 96.58%, is slightly different from the figures for the other Dead titles in this batch. That difference is another reason to match the exact product.
| Configuration | RTP | Theoretical house edge |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 96.58% | 3.42% |
| 2 | 94.51% | 5.49% |
| 3 | 91.51% | 8.49% |
| 4 | 87.56% | 12.44% |
| 5 | 84.55% | 15.45% |
The house edge shown is the arithmetic complement of RTP. Both are theoretical long-run measures, not a session forecast. A player can lose the entire session budget at the highest setting or finish ahead at the lowest. The percentage describes the model across an enormous number of rounds.
Find the deployed value in the game's help or information screen. If an operator landing page quotes only 96.58%, it has not demonstrated that the game client uses that option. Keep a screenshot or written note of the value if configuration matters to your comparison.
Line selection does not switch the certified RTP menu. Neither does a selected expanding symbol. Do not infer the percentage from a short demo, scatter frequency or the number of retriggers you observe.
Different numerical units
Volatility, win cap and maximum exposure
Legacy is rated 8 on Play'n GO's volatility scale and described as high volatility. The feature can concentrate value in rare expansions and retriggers, while many spins may return little or nothing. The score is comparative information, not a timer or guarantee.
The public game page lists a maximum win of 5,000x total bet. At a hypothetical $1 total stake, that multiplier corresponds to a $5,000 ceiling before operator conditions. This arithmetic example does not claim NZD availability or suggest a stake.
The official rules separately list maximum exposure of 500,000 and a probability of 1 in 8,928,571. This is a currency-denominated field at maximum stake in the mathematical record. It should not be converted into a “500,000x” headline. The 5,000x figure is the verified stake-relative cap.
Even with unlimited potential retriggers, the maximum-win cap remains. A feature can add spins and symbol types without exceeding the overall ceiling. Reaching a ceiling is rare by definition; the probability field should not be treated as a countdown.
Reference limits
Bet range, lines and practical exposure
The rules document a reference minimum bet of 0.01 and maximum of 100, with five coins recorded in the mathematical table. Those values cover the rule sheet's generic currency setup and should not be labelled as guaranteed New Zealand-dollar limits. A platform can set denominations and account restrictions.
With up to ten active lines, verify total bet after changing line count or denomination. A 5,000x maximum is based on that total. Comparing only a coin value can understate how much is committed to a spin.
Reducing lines lowers coverage and may lower total exposure, but it does not improve the probability on active lines. Increasing stake after a near miss or dry sequence cannot make scatters more likely. Automatic or fast play can simply compress more financial exposure into less time.
Use affordable entertainment money, set a stopping point and take breaks. Maximum exposure in a rule sheet is not bankroll guidance. The high-volatility label should encourage tighter personal controls, not a larger reserve for chasing features.
Interface check
Mobile, help and demo boundaries
The official records list mobile and desktop. On mobile, find the active-line control, total bet, balance, paytable and feature description before starting. A condensed interface should still let the player see how many lines are active and which RTP is deployed.
The provider may offer an entertainment-only public version. It can help identify controls and see how additional special symbols are represented. Demo credits have no monetary value and short results do not measure RTP. A demo also does not prove that real-money access is lawful or available from New Zealand.
Use a practice mode for interface literacy: open the help, read the eight-spin trigger, find the retrigger wording and learn how to stop. Do not use it to develop a spin timing pattern or infer that a feature will repeat in paid play.
If the mobile and desktop information screens differ, record both version identifiers and ask for clarification. The deployed help should take priority over an undated third-party table.
Operator-level proof required
New Zealand access and current context
This guide does not claim that Legacy of Dead is available through a current New Zealand operator. Play'n GO's global page confirms publication; it does not identify the legal status of an external casino, its catalogue or the RTP it deploys.
The Department of Internal Affairs' player guidance was checked on 6 October 2026. It explains the transition under the Online Casino Gambling Act, including the period around 1 December 2026 and the later licence process. Because the framework is time-sensitive, use the official DIA page and our dated legal-status guide rather than treating a slot review as legal advice.
Verify operator identity, age rules, New Zealand status, payments, account checks, complaints, payout limits and self-exclusion tools. A .com page, NZD option or local flag does not by itself prove authorisation. Respect age and location restrictions.
Keep game and operator assessments separate: accurate game rules do not make an operator trustworthy, and valid operator status does not mean the highest RTP configuration is used.
Two-minute audit
What to verify before relying on the game
- Confirm the title is Legacy of Dead and provider is Play'n GO.
- Look for Game ID 416 or version 1.0 where displayed.
- Record the live RTP and compare it with all five options.
- Check five reels, three rows and up to ten selectable lines.
- Confirm the Tomb is Wild and Scatter and three award eight spins.
- Read how the special symbol expands across non-adjacent reels.
- Verify that a retrigger adds eight spins and another special symbol.
- Keep the 5,000x cap separate from 500,000 maximum exposure.
- Review operator legal and payout terms independently.
If the help differs, use it for the deployed version and send the discrepancy through our corrections process. Include the source date, version and screenshot where permitted rather than combining incompatible fields.

How Legacy differs from related titles
Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead begins with ten free spins and keeps one selected expanding symbol under the current rules. Its five RTP values and volatility level also differ slightly from Legacy.
Pilgrim of Dead begins with five spins, lets the player randomise the selected symbol once and uses sticky progress by reel. It has a 30-spin cap and a 10,000x maximum. GO Collect adds Gold Staters, a three-respin Vault and an optional gamble.
These facts identify the correct review; they do not rank the games or predict a better session. For catalogue categories, series labels and source methodology, return to the Play'n GO games guide.
The safest comparison uses the same fields in the same units: active-line structure, starting free spins, retrigger effect, RTP shown in the deployed client, volatility on the provider's scale and maximum win as a multiple of total bet. Theme, soundtrack and animation are matters of preference and do not replace those controls. A game with a 10,000x ceiling is not automatically better value than one capped at 5,000x, because the ceiling does not state the distribution or probability of ordinary outcomes. Likewise, more possible retriggers do not guarantee more free spins in a session. Keep each title's help page open while comparing, and avoid tables that blend top RTP from one configuration with feature rules from another version.
Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
What is the Legacy of Dead RTP?
The current official rules list 96.58%, 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55%. They are alternative certified configurations. Check the percentage shown in the exact game client.
How many free spins does Legacy of Dead award?
Three or more Tomb Scatter symbols award eight free spins. Three or more Tombs during the feature award eight additional spins and select an additional special expanding symbol.
Can more than one symbol expand?
Yes. One regular symbol is selected when free spins begin, and each qualifying retrigger adds another selected regular symbol. That is a defining difference from the original Book of Dead.
What is the maximum win?
The official product record lists 5,000 times total bet. The rule sheet also has a separate maximum-exposure value of 500,000 at maximum bet; it is not a 500,000x win cap.
Are free-spin retriggers unlimited?
The current public product page describes unlimited potential retriggers, and the checked rule sheet does not state a free-spin cap. Random outcomes still control whether a retrigger occurs; “unlimited potential” is not a promise of repeated awards.
