Short answer
Evidence-led verdict
Hellcatraz is a Relax Gaming first-party title identified in the checked demo as hellcatraz. the current official package is dated 26 November 2024 and marked v2.0.6; the official release record dates the game to 5 May 2020. The rules describe six reels by six rows with 46,656 ways and cascading wins. Those identifiers matter because lower-return builds and market-specific clients can share the same artwork.
Current v2.0.6 help states 96.46% RTP for Lockdown Mode, 96.30% for Mixed Mode and 96.83% for the feature-purchase route. These are mode-specific values for the checked package, not a single universal Hellcatraz percentage.
The checked help does not state one fixed ordinary-game maximum. Its paytables and any separately documented jackpot rules must therefore be read without inventing a universal cap. The reference stake range is €0.10 to €25. The risk profile is not consistently classified in official launch-period material; return and prize information do not predict whether a feature or large award will occur in a session.
This page confirms studio authorship, current help text and public release status. It does not claim that a New Zealand operator offers the title, that a demo is a local real-money product, or that a displayed euro-denominated reference range will appear as NZD. Those questions require a separate operator and live-client check.

Original prison-island release
Hellcatraz is not Hellcatraz 2 Dream Drop
This page covers Hellcatraz, game ID hellcatraz, released on 5 May 2020. It uses a six-by-six grid, 46,656 ways, cascading wins, Mystery counters and persistent Key collection.
The Hellcatraz 2 Dream Drop guide owns the sequel query. That 2023 title has a different starting layout, expanding Mystery positions and Dream Drop jackpot system. Its RTP and cap cannot be imported into the original.
The current original-game bundle identifies v2.0.6 dated 26 November 2024. Its help directly states the mode-specific returns and purchase rules used here. The product page gives a €0.10–€25 reference range, which is not a promise of NZD controls.
Relax's global demo confirms the checked package but not New Zealand availability. A named operator must separately prove territorial eligibility and expose the same game ID, mode and return.
Ways foundation
Six reels, six rows and 46,656 ways
Regular symbol wins form from the leftmost reel across consecutive reels. With six positions on each of six reels, a six-reel match can have up to 6⁶ position combinations, producing the advertised 46,656 ways.
Wilds appear on reels two through six and substitute for normal symbols. Because reel one starts every way, a Wild on later reels can continue an existing leftmost symbol route but cannot create a new route without an eligible reel-one symbol.
The product's “46,656 ways” describes payout paths, while its launch-period “up to 46,656×” wording describes win potential. They happen to use the same number but are different concepts and must not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
Repeated evaluation
Winning symbols clear before the next cascade
After a winning evaluation, contributing symbols are removed and new symbols fall into the open positions. The refreshed grid is evaluated again. Cascades continue while each new arrangement produces another win.
A cascade is part of the same paid round, not a separately charged spin. Its importance is twofold: it can add ordinary wins and it reduces the counters shown on active Mystery symbols.
When no new win forms, the cascade sequence ends. Previous non-winning rounds do not store countdown progress unless a separate persistent rule says so; Mystery counters belong to their current appearance.
Countdown reveals
Mystery symbols count cascades to zero
Mystery symbols are present on every spin. Each carries a counter showing how many cascades are required before its reveal. Every qualifying cascade reduces the number by one.
At zero, all Mystery symbols tied to that counter reveal as the same randomly selected normal symbol. A large group can therefore become a common paying symbol, but reaching zero first requires the round to sustain enough cascades.
The visible counter is not a promise that the round will continue. If wins stop while the counter remains above zero, the unrevealed potential ends with that round.
Choose before play
Lockdown and Mixed change both counters and RTP
In Lockdown Mode, every Mystery symbol on the grid uses the same countdown value. If the cascade chain reaches zero, the symbols reveal together. Current help states 96.46% RTP for this mode.
Mixed Mode uses two independent countdown values, which may coincidentally be equal. Every Mystery symbol is assigned to one or the other with 50% probability. The two groups can therefore reveal at different points. Its stated RTP is 96.30%.
The 0.16 percentage-point difference is a long-run mathematical distinction, not a reliable session ranking. The selected counter behaviour may matter more visibly in one short round, but neither mode guarantees more cascades or a reveal.
Persistent bonus meter
Each overlay contributes one to ten Keys
Key symbols appear as overlays on normal base-game symbols. Each awards between one and ten Keys, after which the underlying symbol behaves normally for win evaluation.
At 2,000 collected Keys, Super Free Spins trigger and the meter resets. If a collection passes the threshold, excess Keys carry into the next meter rather than disappearing. For example, a total reaching 2,004 starts the next cycle with four.
Key collection is available in both Lockdown and Mixed modes. The mode controls Mystery counters and RTP, while the persistent Key threshold remains the bonus-entry mechanism.
Five-spin starting award
Super Free Spins reveal Mystery symbols immediately
The bonus starts with five Free Spins. During these spins, ordinary Mystery symbols do not count down through cascades; they reveal as soon as they land. That removes the base game's requirement to sustain a cascade chain before the conversion.
The immediate reveal does not specify which regular symbol appears and does not guarantee a win. It changes timing and provides more direct Mystery transformations within the five-spin feature.
The feature stake comes from the weighted Key history unless a full purchase defines it directly. This prevents a last-moment stake increase from revaluing a long meter completed mostly at lower stakes.
Bonus-only counter
Golden Mystery symbols can award an additional spin
A Golden Mystery symbol exists during Super Free Spins. Unlike ordinary feature Mystery symbols, it requires two cascades to reach its outcome. If that happens, it awards one additional spin and transforms into a random symbol.
The extra spin is conditional. The feature must produce two cascades while the Golden symbol remains relevant; landing the symbol alone does not immediately extend the count.
This distinction is easy to miss because ordinary Mystery symbols reveal immediately in the bonus. The Golden version deliberately retains a countdown and supplies the retrigger-like award.
Two paid paths
Full purchase and Key top-up use different prices
A full feature purchase costs 200× the chosen feature bet. It enters Super Free Spins directly and leaves the existing Key collection unaffected, preserving progress for the normal meter.
The top-up option charges 0.1× the chosen bet for every missing Key needed to reach 2,000. If 250 Keys remain, the formula is 25× the chosen feature bet. After top-up entry, the Key collection resets.
Current help states 96.83% RTP for the purchase route. Availability is jurisdiction- and operator-dependent. The higher published return than either base mode does not remove the risk of losing most or all of the purchase price.
Meter stake accounting
Collected Keys determine a weighted-average feature bet
The game records the bet associated with every collected or purchased Key. Super Free Spins use a weighted average, with more Keys at a given stake giving that stake more influence.
If the result is not an integer multiple of the minimum bet, stochastic rounding applies. Current help's general example rounds 1.2 minimum-bet units to two with 20% probability and one with 80% probability.
The rule matters for both natural collection and top-up. Always read the feature bet shown before entry; do not assume it equals the last base spin or the largest stake used during collection.
Live-help evidence
RTP, house edge and alternative builds
Current v2.0.6 help states 96.46% RTP for Lockdown Mode, 96.30% for Mixed Mode and 96.83% for the feature-purchase route. These are mode-specific values for the checked package, not a single universal Hellcatraz percentage. Subtracting that value from 100% gives a theoretical house edge of 3.54%. Both numbers describe the same long-run mathematical relationship from opposite directions; they are not separate charges and they are not a forecast for a deposit.
| Checked mode or route | Theoretical RTP | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Lockdown Mode | 96.46% | Current v2.0.6 help: 26 November 2024 |
| Full feature purchase or Key top-up | 96.83% | Applies only to the documented paid route where available |
| Mixed Mode | 96.30% | Verified in current v2.0.6 help |
A return of 96.46% means that across the model's very large test horizon, average awards correspond to 96.46 units for every 100 units staked. It does not mean a player receives that percentage back after 100 spins. High variation, rare features and capped awards can produce short samples far above or below the designed average.
Alternative game IDs are material even when their exact returns are absent from the public product card. A casino can deploy a lower-RTP build under the same consumer title. We therefore do not label 96.46% “universal” or “guaranteed.” Open the information control in the operator client and look for the percentage after the game has loaded.
The Full feature purchase or Key top-up is mathematically separate in the checked help: it states 96.83% RTP and costs 200× the feature bet for a full purchase, or 0.1× per missing Key for a top-up. That route can be unavailable in some markets or excluded by an operator. Its published return does not make the option affordable or reduce the possibility of losing the full price.
Do not infer RTP from a demo balance, one successful bonus, a streaming clip or a site's headline card. A random sample cannot identify the configured model reliably. The useful audit record is the exact title, visible game ID or version, displayed RTP, date and operator client captured together.
Distribution, not prediction
Volatility and maximum-win limits
Official launch-period descriptions conflict: the 30 April 2020 stream announcement called Hellcatraz medium volatility, while a 25 June interview described it as highly volatile. Current v2.0.6 help assigns no formal tier, so this guide preserves the contradiction instead of choosing one label.
The current help does not publish a single fixed ordinary-game cap. That evidence gap must remain separate from moving progressive prizes and promotional maximum-win copy. If a deployed operator client states a cap, record that exact build and the unit it uses rather than importing a number from another source.
A cap is a settlement limit, not a realistic session target. It provides no countdown, hit schedule or evidence that raising the stake improves the chance per dollar. Previous non-winning spins do not move a random future result closer to the cap. Treat every paid round as new exposure.
Practical risk is also shaped by total stake, spin speed, feature purchases, enhanced-spin options and session length. A lower stake repeated rapidly can expose more money than a higher stake used briefly. Decide the total acceptable loss before opening the game, then use account limits and breaks rather than chasing a feature.
Read the charged amount
Bet range, optional costs and affordability
The product record gives a reference minimum of €0.10 and maximum of €25. Those euro-denominated figures identify the provider's reference build. They do not promise equivalent NZD controls, and an operator can apply different denominations or account limits.
Always read the total bet immediately before a paid action. The interface can show denomination, level, lines and total stake separately. Enhanced spins or bonus-reel options may increase the price of a round, while a feature purchase can cost many multiples of the base stake. The amount leaving the balance is the relevant measure.
A useful pre-session calculation is total bet multiplied by the maximum number of rounds you are prepared to buy, assuming the entire amount can be lost. For a feature purchase, treat the whole displayed price as exposed at once. Do not finance a purchase by increasing the base stake after losses.
Promotional funds do not change the slot's RTP. Wagering requirements, game contribution, maximum-bet rules and cash-out limits sit in the operator's terms. Check them independently, because a bonus can make an otherwise permitted game or stake ineligible.
Interface verification
Mobile help and what a demo can prove
The official web demo loaded a responsive game client and exposed the title, help date, version, rules and return information used here. On a phone, locate the menu, information icon, total bet, balance and paytable before considering a paid round. If text is clipped, rotate the device or expand the help rather than relying on a search result.
A demo can demonstrate symbol movement, feature order, mode selection and interface controls with valueless credits. It cannot establish that a real-money operator accepts players in New Zealand, that the operator uses the same game ID, or that its active RTP matches the demo.
Demo results also cannot validate the long-run RTP. Ten, one hundred or even thousands of observed spins are a noisy sample, especially in a volatile game. A large demo win is not a prediction for paid play and a dry demo sequence is not proof that the published mathematics is wrong.
If desktop and mobile help disagree, pause. Record the exact URL or operator, title, mode, help version and percentages. The mismatch can indicate a cached client, a market build or an update. Current deployed help is stronger evidence than an undated review, but conflicting clients still need clarification.
Separate evidence chain
New Zealand access is not inferred from the demo
Relax Gaming's own-games catalogue and public demo show that the studio publishes Hellcatraz. They do not show that a named operator lawfully offers it to a person in New Zealand. Studio publication, aggregation, operator inventory, territorial access and legal status are separate claims.
Before any real-money use, verify the operator's identity, current New Zealand terms, age and location controls, payments, withdrawals, complaints, account limits and self-exclusion tools. A localised page, NZD wallet or country flag is not on its own regulatory proof.
New Zealand's online-gambling position is time-sensitive. Check the Department of Internal Affairs player guidance and our dated legal-status guide at the point of use. This review is about one game's rules and does not provide legal advice.
Even after an operator check, inspect the live game help. A valid operator relationship does not prove the highest RTP, and the right RTP does not prove operator status. Keeping both questions separate prevents a global demo from becoming an unsupported availability claim.
Source reconciliation
What the checked sources establish
The product and release establish authorship, first-game identity, layout, reference bets and release date. Current v2.0.6 help directly states all three RTP values, mode logic, Key costs and feature rules. The dated up-to-46,656× launch claim remains context because current help does not state a universal hard cap.
Current help verifies 46,656 ways, cascades, two Mystery-counter modes, 1–10 Keys, 2,000-Key entry, five Super Free Spins, immediate Mystery reveals, Golden Mystery extra spins, weighted bets, excess carry, a 200× full purchase, 0.1× per-key top-up and 96.83% purchase RTP.
Third-party reviews were used to find frequent questions and contradictions, not to override the live help. Competitors often print only the largest cap, omit the selected mode, describe alternative IDs as exact RTPs without a source, or treat global demo access as operator availability.
The evidence was checked on 6 October 2026. The date matters: Relax can update a client or product card, and operators can retain another certified build. Future checks should start with the deployed help and compare its identifier, version and return with this record.
We do not add a hit rate, feature frequency, universal volatility score, New Zealand operator claim or exact alternative RTP unless the checked first-party material supports it. An explicit evidence gap is preferable to a precise-looking number copied from another release.
Two-minute audit
Checklist before relying on this guide
- Match the full title Hellcatraz and developer Relax Gaming.
- Confirm game ID hellcatraz, help date 26 November 2024 and version 2.0.6 where shown.
- Check the layout: six reels by six rows with 46,656 ways and cascading wins.
- Read feature triggers, reset rules and settlement order in the live help.
- Record the active RTP rather than assuming 96.46%.
- Confirm whether the deployed help states an ordinary cap; preserve the gap if it does not.
- Read the displayed total stake after enabling any option.
- Verify operator identity and New Zealand access independently.
- Check promotional terms separately from game mathematics.
- Set money and time limits that remain acceptable if no feature arrives.
If the live help differs, use that deployed build and send the title, game ID, version, date and screenshot through our corrections process. That evidence lets us update one canonical review without creating duplicate RTP or bonus pages.

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
What is the current Hellcatraz RTP?
Current v2.0.6 help states 96.46% for Lockdown Mode, 96.30% for Mixed Mode and 96.83% for the documented feature purchase.
What is the difference between Lockdown and Mixed Mode?
Lockdown gives all Mystery symbols the same countdown. Mixed uses two independent countdown values and assigns each Mystery symbol to either value with 50% probability.
How are Super Free Spins triggered?
Collect 2,000 Keys in the base game. Each Key overlay awards 1–10 Keys. The bonus begins with five spins and resets the meter, while any Keys beyond 2,000 carry to the next meter.
How much does the full Hellcatraz feature purchase cost?
Current help states 200× the bet used for the feature. A top-up instead costs 0.1× that bet for each missing Key. Both options may be unavailable in some markets.
Is Hellcatraz the same as Hellcatraz 2 Dream Drop?
No. The original Hellcatraz uses a 6×6 grid, 46,656 ways, two Mystery-counter modes and a Key meter. Hellcatraz 2 Dream Drop is a separate sequel and jackpot edition.
